CHAPTER 41: Chorus of Sin is Dead by Daylight's first community-created chapter, releasing August 25, 2026. It introduces The Judgment, the 44th Killer - a divine being built from community votes - and Aurora, a Spiritual Scientist Survivor and the first elderly female Survivor in the game. Every major design decision (lore, weapon, perks, color palette, even the chapter name itself) was decided by players through BHVR's year-long The Grimoire program. This preview covers what we know, what the votes decided, and what is still unknown going into the August release.
This is the third chapter to land in the post-10th anniversary Year 11 lineup, alongside Shane Wiigwaas (June 25) and The Mall (December 2026). For meta predictions on where The Judgment might land once live, see our Patch 10.0.0 killer tier list.
Chapter basics: what Chorus of Sin actually is
The short version of the announcement is straightforward. One Killer. One Survivor. One new chapter. No new map. Chorus of Sin breaks the standard chapter template by being the first DBD chapter in years without a map attached - confirmed during BHVR's Grimoire AMA. That decision was deliberate: building a community-designed map would have doubled the vote load, and BHVR elected to ship the chapter first and put the map on a future roadmap. The map-shaped gap is one reason The Mall gets a dedicated December slot.
The release window and pricing follow standard original-chapter conventions:
- Release date: August 25, 2026
- DLC cost: $4.99 USD / 500 Auric Cells / 9,000 Iridescent Shards
- Format: Killer + Survivor (no map)
- Killer number: 44th in the roster, first original Killer designed entirely by community vote
- Survivor number: First elderly female Survivor; first Survivor designed entirely by community vote
The chapter name itself was community-voted. The other contenders were "Ashes of Absolution" and "The Last Word" - both shelved in the public vote record on wiki.gg's Grimoire page. "Chorus of Sin" won, and the title set the thematic tone: a divine punishment narrative carried by community-designated sinners.
The Grimoire: how players designed this chapter
The unique selling point of Chorus of Sin is not the power or the perks - it is the process. The Grimoire was a recurring community survey that ran from June 22, 2025 through early May 2026, structured in two phases and roughly 13+ voting "Verses," each opened Friday-to-Monday every two weeks. Every two weeks for almost a year, players answered multiple-choice questions about lore, mechanics, and visual design. The votes were tallied publicly, the winning concepts advanced, and the final results fed directly into BHVR's production pipeline.
This is the first time any major asymmetric horror game has run a full year of community voting that culminated in a shipped chapter. The closest prior analogue is The Doctor, whose Chinese community contributed main-theme ideas that inspired his final design. Chorus of Sin is different in kind: every design pillar went through a public vote.
Phase 1 - lore and personality (June to September 2025)
Six Verses plus a Finale shaped the Survivor's origin and the Killer's identity. Most Verses saw the winning option pull 25-38% - a healthy plurality, not a landslide. The "Each Sin Is Unique" Killer philosophy won with 57.99%, the only true majority decision in the lore phase. That phrase became the design thesis for The Judgment: each sin gets a fitting punishment, which directly feeds the Hopeless Exile mechanic.
| Verse | Survivor question | Winner | Killer question | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Origin world | Collapsed World (34.08%) | Killer type | Otherworldly (34.74%) |
| 2 | Life experience | Life of Suffering (25.1%) | Force type | Divine (30.53%) |
| 3 | How to escape | Endless Mysteries (27.41%) | Reputation | Wielder of Exalted Truths (30.36%) |
| 4 | Door of the self | Divine Investigator (32.84%) | Pursuit means | Torment (30.31%) |
| 5 | Vocation | Spiritual Scientist (36.6%) | Truth delivery | Punishing Heart (38.37%) |
| 6 | Defining trait | Boldness (35.55%) | Sin philosophy | Each Sin Is Unique (57.99%) |
Phase 2 - mechanics, appearance, and final concept (December 2025 to May 2026)
Seven more Verses refined the kit. The decisions that matter for the build layer:
- Active power: Ray of Retribution (an AoE laser-like attack)
- Sin accumulation: Pain of Artifacts - sinners who try to wield the Killer's relics invite punishment
- Punishment method: Hopeless Exile - sinners banished to a separate ethereal realm, comparable to the Void from Haunted by Daylight
- How sin is gained: Blasphemous Acts - transgressions committed in the trial
- Killer weapon: Staff (50.24% over hammer and flail)
- Killer name: The Judgment (39.24%)
- Killer perks: Vigilance (50.28%) + Hex: Under Your Thumb (58.40%) + Lay Waste (63.25%)
- Mori concept: "Summon a divine light to destroy the sinner from within" (79.14%, the strongest consensus of any vote)
Every perk name you will read in the next section was decided here. The community picked the perk names themselves - BHVR did not assign them after the fact. For a perk-combo site like ours, that is significant: the names are not just flavour, they telegraph the perk's mechanical family. Hex: prefix means a totem. Boon: prefix means a totem too, but Survivor-side. We will update existing combo pages with these new perks as soon as their numbers drop on PTB.
The Judgment - Killer profile
The Judgment is the 44th Killer in the roster and the first Killer designed entirely by community vote. The lore reads almost like a verse response: a divine Otherworldly being, beautiful and terrifying, "unknowable by your very nature," whose role is to punish sin through torment. The Killer is canonically responsible for destroying Aurora's home world - which means the Survivor is in the trial investigating the cause of her world's collapse.
Identity at a glance
- Type: Otherworldly, Divine
- Reputation: "Wielder of Exalted Truths"
- Weapon: Staff
- Power: Ray of Retribution (AoE laser that can be repositioned after spawn)
- Movement: 4.4 m/s
- Terror Radius: 32 m
- Default cosmetic: Blue flesh with gold and white stone adornments; "A luxurious creature of wicked architecture" (58.10%)
Power: Ray of Retribution
The first internal iteration of the power was a hand-tracking laser that followed the Killer's own movement. Playtesters called it "too easy" and "unfun." The current iteration - the one going to PTB - is an AoE laser-like attack that spawns, then can be repositioned by the Killer after it spawns. The positioning freedom is what makes the power interesting at a meta level: this is not a Wesker-style aim-and-shoot, it is a zone-control power closer in design space to The Nurse's blink or The Spirit's phase - a high-skill kit with strong ceiling, weak floor.
Sin accumulation flows through Pain of Artifacts: if a Survivor tries to interact with one of The Judgment's relics (which we expect to be the lore tie-in to addons), they invite punishment. The actual Blasphemous Acts sin-tracking system is the most novel mechanic in the chapter - the Killer accrues or spends sin resources during the trial, and that budget gates what The Judgment can do. We do not have exact sin budgets or thresholds yet (still under wraps).
Hopeless Exile mechanic
The signature punishment is Hopeless Exile: certain Survivor transgressions send them to a separate ethereal realm during the trial. The community-voted visual description - "An ethereal realm as resplendent as it is perilous" (58.20%) - reads as an inverse Haunted by Daylight Void: bright, beautiful, dangerous. Mechanically this functions like a timed solo state where the Survivor must complete a separate challenge to return to the main trial. If it lands cleanly on PTB, this is the most original Killer mechanic since The Unknown.
The Judgment's three perks
Perk names and slot themes are confirmed; exact numbers are not yet public. Based on the perk names and BHVR's standard perk families, here is the most defensible read on what each perk is:
- Vigilance: An Obsession perk that gives near-perfect Aura reveal on a marked Survivor. The "Obsession + Aura reveal" pattern matches perks like Nemesis and Friends 'Til the End; we expect a chase-tracking or info-tracking kit.
- Hex: Under Your Thumb: A Hex perk that limits Survivor Haste. "Under Your Thumb" telegraphs pressure on Survivor speed boosts (Lithe, Sprint Burst, Dead Hard, Balanced Landing). If the hex also slows repair speed or action speed on hit, this slots into regression+slowdown builds.
- Lay Waste: A regression perk focused on near-complete Generators. "Lay Waste" reads as anti-finisher - perks like Ruin and Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance already do this; Lay Waste looks to be the dedicated "no 99% escapes" perk.
All three names and slot families are confirmed by the Grimoire vote record. Numbers, durations, and exact conditions will not be confirmed until PTB notes drop. When they do, we will publish full perk guides and add them to the relevant combo pages (likely Gen Kick Pain Engine for Lay Waste and the regression quartet, and a new Aura-Info variant if Vigilance lands as Obsession+info).
Mori
The community picked the mori concept with a near-unanimous 79.14% - the strongest consensus of any vote in the Grimoire program. The phrase: "Summon a divine light to destroy the sinner from within." That telegraphs an internal-destruction animation (no external grab-and-slash), with a visual reading of divine light engulfing the Survivor. This matches the broader kit philosophy: punishment comes from within, not from without.
Aurora - Survivor profile
Aurora is the Survivor side of the chapter and a milestone in DBD roster history: she is the first elderly female Survivor and the first Survivor designed entirely by community vote. Her character archetype is a "Spiritual Scientist" from a "Collapsed World" who lived "a Life of Suffering," opened the "Door of the Divine Investigator," and is defined by "Boldness."
The blend of spirituality and science is the character thesis. In the right setting, that blend reads as an analytical mystic; in the wrong setting, as a heretic. Aurora is in the trial because she is investigating the cause of her world's destruction - and The Judgment, the Killer she is most often paired with in trials, is the entity responsible. That sets up a long-form lore arc that should play out across multiple chapters and tomes.
Aurora's default look
The community-voted Survivor design includes three head-accessory options (earrings, glasses, bandana, headpiece - players pick on the character select screen), with a purple stargazer robe as the default. The silhouette reads as older, studious, and quietly formidable - the inverse of the typical Survivor archetype of "young and scared."
Aurora's three perks
Like The Judgment's perks, Aurora's three perk names are confirmed but exact numbers are not yet public:
- Fruits of Your Labor: A Haste-stacking perk that also boosts Healing speed (per the wiki.gg overview). The name reads as incremental - probably tiered Haste that builds the longer you do a specific action.
- Salvation's Cry: An aura-sharing perk that triggers when the Killer starts a chase. The pattern matches Kindred - free info when pressure hits, designed to help solo queue coordinate.
- Boon: Steadfast: A Boon Totem perk that makes a single Generator's progress permanent. The "permanent" framing is what makes this one potentially meta-warping - if Steadfast actually makes the gen permanently safe from regression, it directly counters regression perks like Scourge Hook: Pain Resonance, Eruption, and Ruin.
Salvation's Cry will likely be a strong day-one slot in solo queue builds (it does what Kindred does, but on-demand). Boon: Steadfast, if the "permanent" framing survives PTB, becomes a hard answer to The Spirit's regression engine and similar high-tier slowdown builds. We will publish full perk guides and combo updates when PTB numbers land.
What we still do not know
Honest list of unknowns going into August 25:
- Exact perk mechanics (numbers, durations, conditions) for all six new perks - not yet public, PTB-first
- Exact addons for The Judgment
- PTB start date (no leaks yet as of writing)
- Specific voice actor for The Judgment - BHVR is considering both male and female voice lines for a more gender-neutral read, similar to The Unknown
- Specific voice actor for Aurora - not yet confirmed
- Whether the Judgment is canonically connected to The Entity or is a separate entity in DBD lore
- Aurora's full lore details beyond the world-collapse origin
We will update this post as each unknown gets answered. Subscribe to the blog (link in the footer) for the PTB-day breakdown.
Why this chapter matters beyond the meta
The Chorus of Sin story is bigger than a Killer+Survivor pair. It is the first time a major asymmetric horror studio has shipped a full chapter designed end-to-end by community vote, and it sets a template that other studios are already watching. BHVR's investment in the format - a year of biweekly Verses, public vote tallies, the finale Bloodpoint reward, the AMA follow-up - signals that this is not a one-off marketing stunt. If Chorus of Sin performs well commercially, expect the Grimoire format to recur annually and to expand into map design (which is likely why The Mall got its own December slot rather than being bundled here).
For players, the immediate payoff is six perks that could meaningfully shift the meta on day one: solo queue coordination (Salvation's Cry), Aura tracking (Vigilance), Hex denial (Hex: Under Your Thumb), regression defense (Lay Waste), Haste stacking (Fruits of Your Labor), and a Boon that protects progress (Boon: Steadfast). Every one of those names is a slot that could meaningfully shift the meta on day one - assuming PTB numbers support the strong community read.
FAQ
When does Chorus of Sin release?
August 25, 2026. Confirmed by BHVR's 10th Anniversary Recap, wiki.gg, and Shacknews coverage.
Is Chorus of Sin the first community-created chapter?
Yes. The Grimoire program ran from June 2025 to May 2026 with 13+ voting rounds that decided lore, mechanics, weapon, perks, color palette, and final character names. Prior to this, The Doctor was the closest analogue (Chinese community contributed theme ideas), but Chorus of Sin is the first chapter where every pillar went to public vote.
Does Chorus of Sin come with a new map?
No. Confirmed during BHVR's Grimoire AMA. The Mall, an entirely separate map tied to Dwight Fairfield's backstory, is the next new map release and is scheduled for December 2026.
Who is The Judgment?
The 44th Killer in the DBD roster. A divine Otherworldly being wielding a staff, with the power Ray of Retribution and the punishment mechanic Hopeless Exile. Movement 4.4 m/s, 32 m Terror Radius. Three perks: Vigilance, Hex: Under Your Thumb, Lay Waste.
Who is Aurora?
The first elderly female Survivor in DBD and the first Survivor designed entirely by community vote. A Spiritual Scientist from a Collapsed World, defined by Boldness. Three perks: Fruits of Your Labor, Salvation's Cry, Boon: Steadfast.
Will the new perks work with existing builds?
Likely yes for most of them. Hex: Under Your Thumb and Lay Waste look like natural fits for regression and slowdown builds. Salvation's Cry should slot into solo queue info builds alongside Kindred. Boon: Steadfast has potential as a hard counter to regression-heavy Killer builds if the "permanent progress" reading survives PTB. Full build recommendations will land on this site once PTB numbers are public.
