Slugging - downing a Survivor and leaving them on the ground while hunting the rest of the team - is the killer strategy solo queue players hate most. It's hard to counter without comms. These builds are tested against slugging killers in solo queue with no voice chat and no coordinated SWF.
What slugging looks like in patch 10.0.0
The standard slugging playbook: killer downs Survivor A, then patrols the gens while Survivor A crawls. Once the killer finds Survivor B, they down them too. Now 2 Survivors are on the ground. The killer comes back to finish them off, possibly with a Hex: No One Escapes Death active.
This works because solo queue Survivors can't coordinate to come back for the slug. They don't know the killer is back. By the time they realise, both slugs are dead.
Look at what the killer is actually risking. Slugging costs time on a downed player and only pays off if nobody rescues. In a premade lobby the rescue is instant and the slug is worthless. Solo queue, the expected number of competent rescuers is low, so the killer takes the free value. Your job is to make that expected number irrelevant.
One detail makes it worse. The moment Hex: No One Escapes Death lights up, every Survivor is permanently Exposed and the killer picks up Haste. That is not a four person rescue problem, that is a race against one very motivated killer with a downed teammate you cannot see.
What solo queue actually punishes you for
Slugging is the loudest failure in solo queue, but not the only one. These are the mistakes that decide a round, and every one of them is something a well-chosen loadout reduces.
- Greeding a generator while someone crawls 60 metres away. You finish that gen and get downed before the slug is even picked up.
- Picking up a teammate mid-chase. You turn one death into two, hand the killer a free double, and end up on the hook yourself with no Decisive Strike left.
- Chasing information you do not have. Without an aura perk you are guessing which side of the map the killer is on, and every wrong guess is 20 seconds of downtime.
- Healing without a plan. Sloppy Butcher puts injured Survivors into Haemorrhage and Mangled for 70/80/90 seconds and raises bleeding frequency by 50/75/100%, so the 60 seconds of progress you just made can regress out from under you.
- Tunneling, which is a different problem with the same root cause.
A perk loadout fixes all five because each perk triggers off something you already experience, not off a comm. You get unhooked, so Resurgence fires. You break line of sight, so Sprint Burst fires. You get picked up, so Decisive Strike arms. Nothing in that chain needs a teammate to be good, only present.
The build: Anti-Slug
The Anti-Slug combo runs Unbreakable + Sprint Burst + We're Gonna Live Forever + Decisive Strike. Four perks that independently counter slugging without needing coordination:
Unbreakable
Self-recover from the dying state. No more crawling and hoping someone finds you. Unbreakable lets you completely recover from the Dying State once per trial and increases recovery speed by 25/30/35%. It costs nothing, needs no teammate, and works on every map. If you change one thing about your solo queue loadout, change this one.
The value is psychological as much as mechanical. A killer who slugs you has to decide whether to stand there and watch the floor. With Unbreakable armed, that watch is often wasted, and a killer wasting it is not on the gens.
Sprint Burst
Starting to run grants a +50% Haste effect for 3 seconds, at the cost of Exhausted for 60/50/40 seconds. If the killer leaves you slugged to go hunt others, the moment you can stand is the moment this fires. If they come back for the pickup instead, Sprint Burst gives you a real chance to reach a pallet before the swing lands.
Plan the Exhausted window. Sixty seconds with no Sprint Burst, no Lithe and no Dead Hard is a long time. Spend the burst on the pickup, not on every jog, and save the second use for when you are genuinely being chased.
We're Gonna Live Forever
+100% healing speed while healing a dying Survivor, and any dying Survivor you get back to the Injured State is granted the Endurance effect for 6/8/10 seconds, once every 30 seconds. This is the I will get you up before the killer can punish perk. If that unhook gets interrupted, the Endurance is the difference between taking one hit and taking two.
It pairs well with Kindred for the full rescue package, since that pairing is the Altruist build. But run it as a bonus, never as the plan. Assume the rescue is your own problem and treat any unhook as a bonus outcome.
Decisive Strike
The slug-killer perk. After being unhooked or unhooking yourself, Decisive Strike arms for 40/50/60 seconds. If the killer picks you up inside that window, a successful skill check stabs them, escapes the grab and stuns them for 4 seconds. If they re-down you after an unslug, it is the difference between a hook and a second scramble. It is the perk that says you cannot tunnel me off this hook.
Two honest limits. It deactivates once the exit gates are powered, and permanently if you perform a Conspicuous Action like sprinting in the killer's line of sight. Do not hold it for a clutch moment you force by running. Use it the second they grab you.
How to play the build in solo queue
Early game: if you see the killer slug someone, stay on gens but keep an eye on the slug. If you can reach them without being chased, go and use We're Gonna Live Forever. If the route is not clean, do not try. The second Survivor on the floor is worth less than a finished generator.
Mid game: when the killer leaves the slug, they usually patrol the 3-gen area. Use Sprint Burst when they break chase to reposition toward the slug. Always carry a medkit, or lean on Self-Care, which self-heals without one at 25/30/35% of normal speed. Slow, but it never regresses from being interrupted, which is the whole problem against Sloppy Butcher.
Endgame: if Decisive Strike is available, this is the moment. The killer has to commit to a hook or hand you a free escape, and the stun buys the lobby a generator. Combined with the Endurance from We're Gonna Live Forever, you can survive multiple hook attempts in a row.
Three builds and when to swap between them
Anti-Slug is not a lifestyle. It answers one killer behaviour, and you should be swapping loadouts based on what the killer is doing in front of you. Of the 18 Survivor combos tracked on this site, three cover almost every slugging scenario.
Build one: Anti-Slug, for the killer who leaves you on the ground. Unbreakable, Sprint Burst, We're Gonna Live Forever, Decisive Strike. The default answer, and the one to run the moment a teammate is downed and walked away.
Build two: Anti-Tunnel Divert, for the killer who never leaves. Dead Hard, Off The Record, Decisive Strike, Unbreakable. Dead Hard gives you 0.5 seconds of Endurance the moment you are hit while injured and running, which eats the hit that would have downed you. Off The Record hides your aura, suppresses your grunts and grants Endurance for 60/70/80 seconds after an unhook, so the killer cannot immediately relocate the person you just saved. Full walkthrough on the Anti-Tunnel Divert page.
Build three: Self-Heal Solo, for when nobody is coming. Covered below.
Two more worth knowing. Once the last generator pops and the round becomes a footrace, the Endgame Runner set is built for those minutes. Against a killer who lives in chases, the Runner set with Finesse and Windows of Opportunity keeps you alive between the moments the killer comes back for the slug.
Alternative: Self-Heal Solo
If you do not want to rely on team play at all, the Self-Heal Solo build runs Strength in Shadows + Botany Knowledge + Bond + Resurgence. It keeps you in the match without anyone ever coming to help you.
Strength in Shadows is the one that matters. Down in the Basement it self-heals without a medkit at 70% of normal speed, and finishing that heal reveals the killer's aura to you for 6/8/10 seconds. The Basement is exactly where solo queue Survivors end up, because a slug is a safe place for a killer to park someone while they patrol upstairs.
Botany Knowledge raises healing speed by 30/40/50% and cuts medkit efficiency by 20%, so stack it with Self-Care rather than with a medkit. Bond reveals other Survivors' auras within 20/28/36 metres, which tells you whether a rescue is worth walking toward. Resurgence grants 50/60/70% healing progress the moment you are unhooked, which is how a self-unhook becomes a self-rescue.
The honest weakness: this set does not punish slugging, it just stops slugging from ending your round. Run Anti-Slug first and treat Self-Heal Solo as the answer to a lobby where nobody picks anybody up.
Perk-by-slot recommendations
Slot one: Unbreakable. First pick, no exceptions, unless you are deliberately on the self-heal route. This is the perk that replaces an unreliable team.
Slot two: Sprint Burst. It fires on the most common solo queue moment: the killer breaking chase to work on a downed teammate. That is your cue, and it is free information. If you would rather trigger on a vault, Sprint Burst and Lithe are the same shape, both granting +50% Haste for 3 seconds and the same 60/50/40 second Exhausted cost, but only one of them does anything while you are crawling out of a downed state.
Slot three: We're Gonna Live Forever or Self-Care. If you rescue, take the former. If you do not, take the latter and stop pretending you will.
Slot four: Decisive Strike or Off The Record. The first for a killer who chases and moves on. The second for a killer who parks on a hook, because Endurance plus a hidden aura means the unhook actually sticks.
Flex options: Kindred, which reveals the killer's aura to the whole lobby once they come within 8/12/16 metres of a hook and is the best information in the game against slugging, and Quick & Quiet, which suppresses the noise from rushed vaults and locker entries.
The perks that look anti-slug but are not
Plenty of Survivor perks get labelled anti-slug by well-meaning friends. These ones do not do the job.
Dead Hard sounds like an anti-pickup answer and is not. It gives you 0.5 seconds of Endurance, but only while injured and running, and only if you press the button. It saves you from a hit. It does nothing for a killer who walks away, and a killer who walks away is not swinging at anybody.
Kindred is the best information perk in the game and still does not get you off the ground. Resilience is the same problem: it raises action speeds by 3/6/9% while injured, which is real and completely irrelevant to a slug who is not in front of you. Information you cannot act on is not a counter.
Hope is a fine perk that does nothing for the first 90 percent of the match, since it only activates once the exit gates are powered. Windows of Opportunity reveals breakable walls, pallets and windows within 24/28/32 metres, which is a chase tool, not a slug tool.
Object of Obsession gets mistaken for anti-tunnel insurance. It only fires when the killer actively reads your aura, the speed bump is 2/4/6%, and if you are their current Obsession it gives them your aura for 3 seconds every 30 seconds. It is a trade, not a wall.
The perk people reach for instead of Unbreakable is No Mither, and it is a real option rather than a scam. It gives unlimited Self-Recovery from the Dying State and 15/20/25% recovery speed. The trade is permanent Broken, which is devastating against Sloppy Butcher regression. Take it if you play clean, skip it in a regression lobby.
What to run when your team is not cooperating
This is the normal state of solo queue, so it deserves a real answer rather than a pep talk. When the lobby is not playing as a team, stop building a rescue kit.
Run Unbreakable plus Self-Care, add No Mither if you want the dying state solved permanently, and spend your last two slots on self-preservation rather than We're Gonna Live Forever, which is dead weight if nobody heals anybody. Spine Chill warns you when a killer within 36 metres is actually looking at you, and Iron Will cuts your pain grunts by 80/90/100% while injured, so a silent player is far harder to track.
On items: a medkit beats Self-Care for raw speed, but it is useless on the ground, which is the one place you will want to heal most. Ace in the Hole keeps the add-ons on whatever you find, a cheap way to make a chest worth opening early.
And do the boring thing nobody wants to do: when you see a slug and you are not certain, keep repairing. A generator nobody is on is a worse outcome for you than a teammate you never saw again, because the killer is guaranteed to come for you next.
When this build falls apart
Slugging counters don't work against killers who:
- Slug and face camp the hook, so your Unbreakable recovery is never finished. This is the big one, and it is the situation Off The Record and Kindred answer.
- Run Sloppy Butcher to make every heal regress, which punishes you for carrying no medkit.
- Tunnel instead of slug. Decisive Strike still helps, but Unbreakable never triggers because nobody left you on the ground.
- Run Hex: No One Escapes Death, so the pickup is a guaranteed death anyway.
Against those, swap to a chase build like Dead Hard + Lithe + Windows of Opportunity, or an altruism build on Borrowed Time + We'll Make It + Kindred. The Altruist combo is the strongest anti-tunnel package in the game, because Borrowed Time extends the unhooked Survivor's Endurance and adds 10 seconds of Haste on top. For the chase side, the Lithe Highway combo is the one to learn.
The counter-meta: when slugging IS the right call
Killers who can defend a 3-gen - The Trapper, The Hag, The Doctor with stalling add-ons - will slug because it's optimal. Don't blame them, the game rewards it. Instead, run this build and make their strategy cost more than it's worth.
The Trapper is the clearest example. Traps force Survivors through predictable routes, which is what makes a 3-gen defense hold, which is what makes a slug safe. Against that killer your job is not to rescue, it is to make the slugging window expire with nothing on the floor. Unbreakable does that. So does being somewhere else entirely when the down happens.
For killer-side context, the killer tier list for patch 10 and the full killer ranking are both worth a read.
Solo queue reality check
You will still lose games as solo queue. The killer's job is to find Survivors, down them, and prevent gens. Yours is harder: coordinate 4 strangers across voice-chat-less ping systems. Anti-slug builds do not fix solo queue, they give you a fighting chance when the killer tries the cheapest strategy in the game.
What they do is change the killer's math. A slug against a lobby where everyone can self-recover produces nothing. That is not a win condition, it is a denial of a win condition, and in a 1v4 that is worth real generator time.

Frequently asked questions
Is slugging actually beatable in solo queue?
Not in the sense of stopping it. You cannot make a solo queue killer stop slugging. You can remove the payoff. Unbreakable means a slug produces zero value, and Sprint Burst plus Decisive Strike mean the pickup produces zero value too. The killer's only option left is to finish you on the spot, which costs them the round.
Should I use No Mither instead of Unbreakable?
Sometimes. No Mither gives unlimited Self-Recovery and 15/20/25% recovery speed, so it solves the dying state more thoroughly, and you never produce Pools of Blood. But permanent Broken means healing regression hits you hardest, so it is a bad trade against Sloppy Butcher. Default to Unbreakable, take No Mither when the lobby is clean.
Does Decisive Strike help against slugging specifically?
Less than people think, and it is worth being straight about. It only triggers after you are unhooked or unhook yourself, and only for 40/50/60 seconds. During a slug it does nothing, because you have not been unhooked yet. Its value shows up right after a rescue, when the killer re-downs you and picks you up again. That second grab is the moment it pays, which is why it sits next to We're Gonna Live Forever.
What do I do when my teammate is slugged and I am on a generator?
Finish the skill check, then decide. If the killer is not within eyeshot and the route is clear, go. Bring a medkit if you have one and use We're Gonna Live Forever so they leave with Endurance. If the route is not clear, do not go. Dropping the gen to arrive at a slug late is the most common way solo queue rounds collapse, because you end up crawling yourself. Kindred tells you where the killer is before you commit.
Is Self-Care or a medkit better for this build?
Use both, in different situations. A medkit is faster and heals other people, which matters on the Altruist side. Self-Care heals at 25/30/35% of normal speed with no item, which sounds bad until you realise you can start it while injured on the ground, where a medkit is unavailable. Pick the item for the round you think you are having.
Final verdict
The Anti-Slug build works, but not for the reason most people expect. It does not punish slugging. It makes slugging unprofitable, which in a lobby where you cannot rely on a single teammate is the only version of the plan that will ever execute.
Run Unbreakable first and never drop it for anything but a deliberate self-heal build. Run Sprint Burst second because it fires on the exact moment the killer breaks chase. Run We're Gonna Live Forever third if you intend to rescue anyone, and Self-Care if you do not. Run Decisive Strike fourth, or swap it for Off The Record when the killer camps the hook instead of patrolling the gens.

Slugging is cheap because solo queue Survivors are alone. Stop being alone with a worse loadout.
